About
After growing up on Cape Cod and attending UMASS Dartmouth as an economics major, I was given the opportunity to co-found a start up real estate development company in 1999. We specialized in building custom, shingle style, spec homes in the Newport, Rhode Island area.
My partner and I didn’t have any experience in building these homes so we decided to get our hands dirty. We learned every part of the building process instead of just managing the projects and letting others do the work. This has enabled me to really understand and master each part of the building process from estimating to finish carpentry.
I found that I enjoy doing certain things myself, such as building stairs, woodworking, and cabinet making, and prefer to leave other trades like plastering, insulation, and the mechanical trades to our team of subcontractors that I closely manage. Staying a small niche builder enables me to remain hands on in the work and communicating directly with our clients. I spend almost every day on the job site concentrating on a few jobs at a time.
Many builders neglect to give quality service to their clients after the home is finished and they have been paid. I actually enjoy this part of the business and staying in touch with my clients. I considered starting a company that specialized in this exclusively, as it seems there is a large need. However, I enjoy building and remodeling homes too much and don’t believe one should be done without the other.
I started Black Point Builders to build and service custom homes in the Newport and Coastal RI area for the right reason, because I love the challenge of building and working on custom homes.
